🌗A Binary View of the World🌗
"Since, by its very nature, things in this world cannot remain static, they inevitably decline after reaching a certain level of perfection and becoming incapable of
further progress📈, and conversely, when in a state of complete decline, utterly undermined by chaos, they are unable to fall any lower and must necessarily rise again.
Thus, everything always declines from good to evil and rises from evil to good. For virtue begets peace, peace begets inactivity, inactivity begets chaos, and chaos
begets destruction; and, accordingly, a new order is born from chaos, order begets valor, and from it spring glory and prosperity." 📚
And so it is everywhere…. These rises and falls exist everywhere:
- At the level of states and empires (macro)
- At the individual level (meso)
- At the level of a single cell in our body (micro)
🧵🧵🧵🧵🧵🧵🧵🧵🧵
1. At the level of states and empires
"Rome sought glory and power, not peace" 📚 (Niccolò Machiavelli, Discourses on Livy, p. 265) because "by choosing internal peace, the Roman state would simultaneously weaken itself, because in doing so it would cut itself off from the path to future greatness: by eliminating the causes of discord, Rome would deprive itself of the means to expand" (Machiavelli, p. 119).
"Difficult times did not frighten the Romans or make them submissive"
(ibid., p. 430).
📌The loss of freedom and hedonism are enemies of greatness.📌
"The Romans maintained their noble way of acting as long as they were free... but when they came to love the shady coolness more than the scorching sun," they calmed down, and... "this served as the beginning of the collapse of the entire empire" (Machiavelli, p. 332).
The same applies at the individual level: complacency, mediocrity, and a long, sluggish "satisfaction" lead to degradation.
🔒 "The comfort zone is a dead zone; your true potential will not be realized within it" ⚠️
The noble spirit of Roman citizens.
"When commanding an army, they considered themselves superior to any ruler, did not heed kings or republics, feared nothing, and trembled before no one. But upon
returning to private life, they became modest and humble: it is hard to believe that such changes occurred in the same people"(Machiavelli, p. 418).
A combination of the incompatible.
"Why did the counterculture of rebels, based on a love of rock and drugs, ultimately lead to the emergence of the personal computer industry?
🌐"The 21st century was invented by hippies who wore sandals and smoked marijuana.
They managed to look at the world differently – the strict hierarchy that prevails on the East Coast, in England, Germany, and Japan does not encourage dissent.
The 1960s gave rise to an anarchic mindset, allowing them to imagine a world that does not exist."(Walter Isaacson, Steve Jobs, p. 84)
➕
"The crazy ones, who believe they can change the world, actually do"(From Apple's "Think Different" commercial, 1997).
2. At the individual level.
About great personalities who combine opposites.
"The universal respect for Lorenzo de' Medici became a source of admiring astonishment for all of Italy, which grew daily due to his unwavering wisdom. For in the
discussion of various issues, he was eloquent and his arguments were strong, in his decisions he was prudent, and in the implementation of those decisions, he was
quick and bold... And yet, he was very inclined to indulge in love affairs, enjoyed conversations with witty and humorous people, and childish games more than seemed
appropriate for such a man. Seeing how he simultaneously led a frivolous life and a life full of affairs and concerns, one could think that in the most unimaginable
way, two different natures were combined in him."
"Sometimes he was cold and rude to Chrisann, but he knew how to be charming and persistent. Spirituality coexisted in him with cruelty," Brennan recalled. "A strange
combination."
➕
"At a meeting with students at Stanford, Steve asked the neatly dressed students in the hall: 'How many of you are virgins?' Nervous laughter followed. 'And who has
tried LSD?' The laughter intensified; only one or two raised their hands. Later, Jobs admitted, not without regret, that the new generation seemed more materialistic
and career-oriented to him."
➕
"Steve swung from one extreme to another: sometimes he thought only of Lauren (his wife), and then he would switch to work and become cold and distant," Smith said.
"This caused Lauren a lot of pain."
➕
⚕It seemed that Jobs' brain lacked a mechanism to modulate the bursts of impulsive thoughts that arose in his mind, so the Mac team chose a tactic called the "low-pass
filter" to communicate with him.
By processing his input signals, the employees learned to reduce the amplitude (📈AEP📈) of his high-frequency impulses. This made it possible to smooth out the data set
and obtain a more gradual, average indicator of his behavior.
"After observing how Steve swung from one extreme to another," Hertzfeld said, "we learned to filter his signals and not take it personally."⚕

3. At the cellular level.
The Fates still measure the thread of destiny,
but scientific discoveries and a healthy lifestyle allow the thread to be extended. 😄☝️
"Each of us is born with a predetermined set of genes, but the life we choose significantly affects how these genes manifest themselves." 📚
The “scars” on telomeres, left by life’s hardships, indicate that we have gained valuable experience. Life’s difficulties truly make us stronger and wiser. One of my
(Elissa’s) favorite tests is designed to determine how much a person has grown spiritually after a psychological trauma (gained self-confidence, began to look more
boldly into the future). We used this test in the first study of mothers caring for sick children. Initially, we were puzzled by the fact that the woman with the
shortest telomeres also demonstrated the most noticeable spiritual growth. But when we analyzed this pattern, we figured out what was going on: it was all about the
duration of suffering. Women who cared for sick children for the longest time experienced the greatest telomere wear, but at the same time, their lives contained the
most events that enriched their souls”(📰 Wolfson, W. & Epel, E. (2006). “Stress, post-traumatic growth, and leukocyte aging.” Poster presentation at the American Psychosomatic Society, Denver, Colorado📰).
According to psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, who studied grief and sorrow:
“the most beautiful people are those who have known the bitterness of defeat, known suffering, known struggle, known loss, but ultimately found a way out of the abyss.
These people deeply value, feel, and understand life, which fills them with compassion, kindness, love, and care. Beautiful people are not born; they become”
Even if you manage to find that point where, while gazing into the “abyss,” you become a “dancing star,” the abyss will not yet begin to gaze into you. Even if you manage to escape this abyss, even if you still manage to place the EGO in the place of the ID by delving into the unconscious, the price you paid for your experience may also appear at the cellular level: chronic stress is associated with shorter telomeres. 👹
Is death the only option for the "wounded healer," with his worn-out telomeres, who has faced Scylla and Charybdis? Is his body unable to cope?
At every level, from the macro level (society) to the micro level (cells), there is a kind of struggle that promotes development.
"I think the biggest innovations of the twenty-first century will be the intersection of biology and technology. A new era is beginning, just like the digital one was
when I was his age."
"The entire philosophy of Apple was based on the complete mutual integration of hardware and software. The same integrity can be seen in Steve Jobs himself: his
personality, his demons and dreams, his passions and cunning, his perfectionism, his artistry, and his obsession with control – all of this was closely intertwined in
his methods of doing business and the innovative products he released."
"Such an ⬆intensity⬆ of feelings sometimes looks charming (🌕), and sometimes it scares (🌑)."
(Walter Isaacson, Steve Jobs, p. 640)
This intensity of feelings is the reason for the increase in personality behavior patterns. Those fragments that are potentially inherent in every person, but which at first glance seem incompatible, can be combined by acquiring:
✅Courage 📽Video No. 1
✅Freedom 📽 Video No. 2
✅"Hunger" and recklessness 📽 Video No. 3
This will increase the intensity of the AEP 📈.
"This intensity encouraged a binary view of the world."
As Ralph Waldo Emerson said:
💬 _"Don't be afraid to try new things. Life is one big experiment. The more you try, the better"_💬
Triumvirate 🥇🥈🥉
Two opposing forces are always at war with each other, but there is also a third component, something that unites them.
In Rome, it was: Senate ♻️ King ♻️ People
In personality: Superego ♻️ Ego ♻️ Id
"The hostility that arises between the people and the senate should be treated with tolerance, as an inconvenience that is inevitable in achieving Roman greatness"
(📚 Discourses on Livy, p. 122).
Analogy at the personality level: internal conflict should be treated with tolerance, as an inconvenience necessary for personal growth.
Passion and Discipline
"The two principles that Creon and Antigone defend are those that Bachofen characterized as opposing Matriarchal and Patriarchal principles. ❗❗❗
✅The Matriarchal order is based on blood kinship as functional and unbreakable bonds, equality of all people, respect for human life, and love.
⛔According to the Patriarchal principle, the connection between husband and wife, between ruler and subject, is more important than blood ties. It is the principle of
order and power, subordination, and hierarchy."
"Because a child needs a father, not just a mother,
Because he needs to absorb not only milk" 🎶
"There will be no clap when two palms do not join in it" 📖
Emotions + will = ordered valor.
"Where disciplined valor aligns impulse with the spirit of the times and with circumstances, the individual does not retreat before any difficulties and does not lose
heart"
The combination of Order and Fury
“A prince must know how to imitate both the beast and the man.” 📚
(Niccolò Machiavelli, The Prince, p. 64)
➕
"A man who wishes to do only good will inevitably perish among so many things that are contrary to good. Therefore, a ruler who wishes to maintain his power must learn
to be not good and use this ability when necessary"
👹And you hesitate not because you are an opponent of evil,
but because you are afraid to do evil with your own hands.👹
Questions about this article
01Why can conflict and opposing forces become a source of development?
Tension between opposing forces can turn stagnation and decay into movement toward a new order. In society and within a person, conflict can be painful and dangerous, but under some conditions it becomes a condition for restructuring and growth.
02How can inner conflict contribute to personal growth?
Inner contradictions do not always have to be suppressed. When they are noticed, endured, and reflected on instead of being allowed to turn into destructive paralysis or uncontrolled extremes, they can broaden a person's range of responses and become a source of development.
03How can opposing qualities be combined without destroying oneself?
There is no need to choose once and for all between chaos and rigid order. Impulse, emotion, and will can be coordinated with circumstances and time. Opposing qualities can then complement one another and form what the post calls disciplined valor.
