Fear of Change

Fear of Change

June 27, 2021

Fear of change is not a whim but a response to encountering freedom and uncertainty. 💪 In this text, we explore how anxiety arises at the moment of transition and why it often blocks our intentions even before they become conscious. Where is the boundary between protection and the prison we build for ourselves?

Fear of change arises every time we take a step toward new possibilities—and anxiety appears immediately.

Every time a person makes a leap in search of new possibilities, anxiety follows at once... and then they may be visited by the feeling: “Do I really want to go this far?”

— R. MayFreedom and Destiny, p. 225

Copernicus with his new theory that the Earth revolves around the Sun, or Karl Marx with a radically new approach to economics—the collapse of old foundations leads to upheavals that take on the character of catastrophe.

And what about changes within a person? It is the same: when old foundations collapse, in the transition to a “new life” we experience anxiety. Many people never realize their possibilities, remaining in the cocoon of the familiar, for their intentions to change their lives are blocked by this anxiety before they even reach the level of consciousness.

— R. MayFreedom and Destiny, p. 226

We can avoid anxiety only if we do not undertake this journey—in other words, by renouncing our own freedom.

— R. MayFreedom and Destiny, p. 226

In our society, the most common ways of denying the anxiety associated with freedom are alcohol and drugs... But this is a futile pursuit: the next day anxiety grows stronger.

— R. MayFreedom and Destiny, pp. 229–230

Another way is the defense mechanisms of the psyche, which serve to preserve mental homeostasis. Through projections, hyperpolarization, and past fixed patterns based on our experience, we create dogmas and hang labels so that a serene life continues in this fragile house of conscious life.

Such dogmatism really does allow one to avoid anxiety, but for that there will certainly be a punishment. In this case a person builds a prison around themselves and their ideas; they block anxiety, cutting off both their possibilities (for a more complete life) and their own maneuverability. They manage to avoid anxiety, but such a person becomes a prisoner in a prison created by themselves. And this, by definition, is nothing other than the loss of freedom.

— R. MayFreedom and Destiny, p. 240

And the only way is liberation from dogmas, which expands the range of our ideas and helps us look around in search of greater possibilities. Freedom means that we can see the most diverse truths: some come to us from the West, others from the East, some from the realm of technology, others connected with intuition...

We can seek new forms, new ways of relating to one another, new styles of life.

— R. MayFreedom and Destiny, p. 241

💫 Principle: live dangerously (Nietzsche). Freedom is inseparable from anxiety, which is felt as danger.

🚩 Leitmotif:

Yes, we’re scared—fear and solipsism—yet in spite of the world we soar amid the bustle.

— Oxxxymiron“Tower of Ivory”

Understand, I am a hybrid; I grew up both this way and that.

From the world of parties — on Dumskaya,
To the world of books — in Daursky.
