War and Peace: The Heterogeneity of Cognition

April 15, 2020

What happens when a person’s inner “peace” stops feeling whole and meets its own “war”? This essay brings Tolstoy, psychology, rap, philosophy, and lived experience into the same field, treating conflict not only as destruction but also as a source of new understanding. Freedom confronts predetermination, scientific knowledge meets worldly wisdom, and different perspectives form a heterogeneity of cognition. Perhaps contradiction does not always need to be resolved at once: sometimes it is precisely what makes another way of seeing possible.

1️⃣ About war and peace within each of us

– We have no right to punish.

– If I were a woman, I would do it, Mari. It is a woman's virtue. But a man should not and cannot forgive,” and although he had not thought of Kuragin until this moment, all the pent-up anger suddenly rose in his heart. “If Princess Mary is already urging me to forgive, then it means I should have punished him long ago,” he thought. And, without answering Princess Mary any further, he began to think now about that joyful, angry moment when he would meet Kuragin.

— L.N. Tolstoy"War and Peace," p. 673

Around the wounded man, whose head seemed familiar to Prince Andrei, doctors bustled about... His interrupted sobs, frightened and resigned to his suffering, could be heard. Listening to these moans, Prince Andrei wanted to cry. Was it because he was dying without glory, because he felt sorry to part with life, because of these irretrievable childhood memories, because he was suffering, because others were suffering and this man was moaning so pitifully before him? But he wanted to cry with childish, kind, and almost joyful tears.
The wounded man was shown the severed leg in a boot with dried blood.
"Oh! Ooooo!" he cried like a woman.
In the unfortunate, sobbing, exhausted man, from whom his leg had just been taken, Prince Andrei recognized Kuragin... He now remembered the connection that had existed between them and this man, through the tears that filled his swollen eyes, which looked at him dimly. Prince Andrei remembered everything, and a feeling of enthusiastic pity and love for this man filled his happy heart.
Prince Andrei could no longer restrain himself and wept tender, loving tears for the people, for himself, and for their and his own delusions.
Compassion, love for brothers, for those who love, love for those who hate us, love for enemies – this is what Princess Mary taught me, and what I did not understand; this is why I felt sorry for life, this is what still remained for me if I were alive. But now it is too late. I know that."

— Leo Tolstoy"War and Peace," p. 864

💡 The feeling of "war" gave rise to "peace" in him.

2️⃣ On the necessity of "war" for life

"The concerns of life required her participation..." (p. 1137)

Solitude exhausted and tormented her, but it was necessary for her.
A spiritual wound, resulting from the rupture of the spiritual body, is, just like a physical wound, strange as it may seem,
after a deep wound has healed and its edges seem to have come together, a spiritual wound, like a physical one, heals only from within by an outward force of life.

(Leo Tolstoy, War and Peace, p. 1137)

“He (Pierre) was then only eager to leave these places, where people were killing each other, as quickly as possible, and find some quiet refuge where he could come to his senses, rest, and reflect on all the strange and new things he had learned during this time.”

— Leo TolstoyWar and Peace, p. 1165

Previously, he talked a lot, got excited when he spoke, and listened little; now he rarely got carried away in conversation and knew how to listen in such a way that people readily shared their most intimate secrets with him. They felt that he seemed to be getting to the very core of their lives; and at first, they were distrustful, but then they expressed their hidden, good qualities with gratitude.

— Leo TolstoyWar and Peace, p. 1167

💡 Here, Jung’s idea is confirmed: only a wounded Healer can heal.
“Peace” shines in those who have gone through “war.”

“Pierre had a new quality that made him likeable to everyone: it was his recognition of the possibility for each person to think, feel, and look at things in their own way. This legitimate characteristic of each person, which had previously worried and irritated him, now formed the basis of the participation and interest he took in people. The differences, sometimes even complete contradictions, in people’s views of life and of each other, pleased him.”

— Leo TolstoyWar and Peace, p. 1169

— They say: misfortunes, suffering,” said Pierre.
— “Yes, and if right now, at this very moment, I were told: do you want to remain the person you were before, or would you rather go through it all again? For God’s sake, I would go through it all again. We think that when we are thrown off our usual path, everything is lost; but in reality, something new and good is just beginning.”

— Leo TolstoyWar and Peace, p. 1181

3️⃣ About the fact that everything is predetermined.

“The reasons for all this are countless. The more we delve into the search for reasons, the more reasons are revealed to us, and each individual reason or a whole series of reasons seems equally valid in itself, and equally false in its insignificance in comparison with the complexity of the event, and equally false in its inability to produce the event that has occurred. Without one of these reasons, nothing could have happened. Therefore, all these reasons – billions of reasons – coincided in order to produce what happened. And consequently, nothing was the exclusive cause of the event, but the event had to happen simply because it had to happen. The coincidence of countless circumstances was necessary, without one of which the event could not have occurred…”

“Each person lives for himself, uses freedom to achieve his personal goals, and feels with all his being that he can now do or not do a certain action; but as soon as he does it, this action, performed at a certain moment in time, becomes irreversible and becomes the property of history (biography), in which it has not a free, but a predetermined meaning.”

— Leo TolstoyWar and Peace, pp. 644–645

So, is everything predetermined? But it is not determined.

The condition for this is the heterogeneity of cognition. 🌍
And the diversity of experience ⚠️

FAQ

Questions about this article

01Why can inner conflict be necessary for a person?

Inner conflict forces a person to confront contradictions, pain, and their own misconceptions. By going through such a “war,” a person can arrive at compassion, see themselves and others more clearly, and discover new possibilities for understanding and change.

02How can human freedom be reconciled with the predetermination of events?

A person experiences their decisions as free, but once an action has been taken, it becomes an irreversible part of history and the result of many converging circumstances. Freedom of choice and the conditioned nature of what has happened therefore do not have to be mutually exclusive ideas.

03What is the heterogeneity of cognition?

The heterogeneity of cognition is the combination of different points of view, ways of thinking, and diverse experience. It makes it possible to compare different ways of understanding the world, notice what remains incomprehensible within ourselves, and connect scientific knowledge, practical experience, and worldly wisdom to find new ideas and solutions.
