Integrated logic of the DET model
The relationship between the three postulates is essential:
- The first postulate sets the condition of development: taking in difference, heterogeneity, and dialectics.
- The second describes the consequence of that condition: disrupted homeostasis and personality types formed through existential oscillation.
- The third names the condition of survival and growth: the ability to endure oscillation without collapsing.
Amplitude, endurance and avoidance: the dynamics of adaptation
The second and third postulates make it possible not only to describe personality types, but also to understand how a psychic system adapts to inner complexity.
If the amplitude of existential experience (AEE) can be understood as an indirect indicator of the degree to which dialectics and heterogeneity have been taken in, and if inner oscillations are inevitable in that case, then their pronounced absence may point to a narrowing of the field of experience: to protective mechanisms that limit the admission of otherness into the psyche.
Taking in heterogeneity is not yet development. It only creates load on the system. The decisive question belongs to the third postulate: can the personality endure the oscillations that arise?
If the overcoming mindset has been formed, the person does not break contact with reality, does not try to eliminate tension immediately, and can live through oscillations as a process. In this case, amplitude becomes a source of growth, increasing complexity, and the formation of stable identity.
If the overcoming mindset is absent or insufficiently developed, the psychic system adapts. An alternative branch appears: avoidance.
In this model, avoidance is understood not as “weakness” or “error”, but as a protective mechanism that preserves integrity under overload. When oscillations become unbearable, the system begins to reduce them not through overcoming, but through reducing what it takes in.
- isolation
- rigid beliefs
- a narrowed circle of experience
- intellectualization, moralization and rationalization
- the construction of psychological and existential barriers
The resulting logic
Thus avoidance is an attempt to restore homeostasis by impoverishing inner dialectics. The system becomes “smarter” and closes itself in order not to disintegrate.
At this level it becomes clear that neurotic, schizotypal and rigid forms of organization can be understood not as a “breakdown”, but as the price a system pays for lacking the ability to endure inner complexity.
- the first postulate creates tension
- the second describes the form of reaction
- the third determines the outcome: overcoming/endurance or a protective reaction
Transition to DET psychotherapeutic practice↓
This model maps directly onto psychotherapeutic work. In practice, the therapist can analyze:
- Whether the person has inner dialectics
Can they take in opposites, allow otherness and accept their own inner duality? - How their amplitude of oscillation is structured
How pronounced are the rises and falls, and what are their frequency, intensity and stability? - Whether the overcoming mindset has been formed
Can the person endure tension, or do they try to eliminate, avoid or suppress it immediately?
When a deficit in one of the elements is identified, therapy can be directed not toward “fixing the personality”, but toward completing the missing link. In this sense, the model works as a diagnostic and navigational map, not as a normative standard.
Movement from the opposite direction: inversion of entry into the therapeutic process and dosed increase of the shadow
In some cases, entry into therapeutic work happens not through a high amplitude of experience, but, on the contrary, through its absence. Minimal oscillations, lack of inner inertia, smoothed existential experience and a stable feeling of “evenness” may point to a systemic restriction on taking in heterogeneity.
In figurative terms, this means that the inner “tap” of heterogeneity is tightened; shadow and otherness are not admitted inside; psychological homeostasis is maintained by narrowing the field of experience.
Such a state is not pathological in itself. It is an adaptive way of stabilization chosen by the personality, consciously or unconsciously, when there is not yet an ability to endure or structure complex experience.
- the inner “tap” of heterogeneity is tightened
- shadow and otherness are not admitted inside
- psychological homeostasis is maintained by narrowing the field of experience
The logic of movement from the opposite direction
In such cases, therapeutic work can be built in the opposite direction from the classical scenario of “lowering amplitude”. The task is not stabilization, but a careful expansion of the inner field. The key principle here is dosage: not provoking crisis, not retraumatization, but creating conditions in which the system can begin to oscillate slightly without losing integrity.
Shadow as a resource, not a threat
In this logic, shadow is introduced not as a destructive factor, but as a source of movement and vitality. It can happen through expanding the spectrum of experience, encountering alternative viewpoints, moving beyond rigid beliefs and carefully disrupting habitual scripts.
The appearance of even a small amplitude is treated as a positive sign: the system begins to react, differentiate and experience tension, which means development becomes possible.
- expanding the spectrum of experience
- encountering alternative viewpoints
- moving beyond rigid beliefs
- carefully disrupting habitual scripts
Limiting the flow as a legitimate choice
From a humanistic point of view, it is essential to recognize that limiting the incoming flow is an admissible choice. A person has the right to “tighten the tap” of heterogeneity, reduce the amount of new material, build barriers and protective mechanisms. This is neither an error nor a defeat, but one form of adaptation aimed at preserving integrity.
However, the methodology of Dialectical Existential Therapy makes this choice conscious. It does not impose development as a moral duty, but shows the difference between two paths: the path of limitation, which is simpler, stabilizing and narrows the field of growth; and the path of development, which is more difficult and requires endurance, structuring and integration.
If the person chooses the path of development, they need additional elements of support: the inner overcoming mindset and external tools of structuring and containment. These elements are described in the following applications, which extend the model and build a bridge to the DETai platform as a technological space of support.
Extensions of the DET concept
The following extensions clarify the practical and technological dimension of the model.
External structuring as support, not a substitute for overcoming
Within Dialectical Existential Therapy, it is important to mark one more aspect. It is not a separate postulate, but it substantially affects the real possibility of personality development. This is the role of external supports and technical interfaces in the process of integrating heterogeneous experience.
As shown above, taking in heterogeneity and otherness inevitably disturbs psychological homeostasis and leads to an increase in the amplitude of inner oscillations. Even when the overcoming mindset is present, this process can be subjectively difficult: complexity, uncertainty and the constant emergence of the new load the ability to preserve integrity.
In this context, external interfaces, including technical tools, digital environments and AI-enriched systems, acquire a special function. They act not as means of avoidance, but as helpers in structuring what has already been accepted inside.
Their task is not to live the experience for the person and not to remove existential responsibility, but to help externalize overloaded inner dynamics, give form to a chaotic flow of meanings and create a temporary external support/container for later integration.
Thus external structuring and containment become amplifiers of the overcoming process rather than its alternative. The external “container”, including digital environments and AI interfaces, can temporarily hold, organize and process excessive inner dynamics without removing responsibility from the person, while lowering the risk of overload.
- externalize overloaded inner dynamics
- give form to a chaotic flow of meanings
- create a temporary container for later integration
AI as an existential partner
In the extended model of Dialectical Existential Therapy enhanced by artificial intelligence (DETai), technical systems cease to be neutral interfaces. They begin to perform the role of an existential partner that helps the personality hold and process increasing complexity.
AI and agentic systems can help record and order experiences, connect scattered elements of experience and support the continuity of reflection when the amplitude of oscillations is high.
It is important to emphasize that this assistance does not cancel the need for personal effort and the ability to endure. It only lowers the risk of overload, allowing the person not to resort to crude protective strategies too early.
- record and order experiences
- connect scattered elements of experience
- support continuity of reflection at high amplitude
