Struggle: does it make us weaker or stronger?

January 29, 2025

Struggle does not always make us stronger, nor does it inevitably destroy us. This essay asks when hardship becomes material for growth and when it turns into an exhausting habit of living through constant resistance.

Struggle: does it make us weaker or stronger?

STRUGGLE: DOES IT MAKE US WEAKER OR STRONGER?

In a modern world where so much is accessible and safe, we often wonder: does
the absence of hardship really make us stronger? 🌱

❇️ THE EVOLUTION OF RESILIENCE IN MODERN SOCIETY ❇️

The struggle for survival was once a natural part of human life. Today,
developed societies have to recreate situations that used to arise on their
own. Physical inactivity and a lack of movement are only two examples of how
comfort can become a challenge to health and resilience. 🏋️‍♂️ Scheduled
workouts have become a new way to sustain physical and mental fitness,
replacing the natural activity that was once inseparable from daily life.

❇️ THE PHILOSOPHICAL ROOTS OF STRUGGLE ❇️

Friedrich Nietzsche wrote:

“Severity, violence, slavery … everything evil … serves to elevate the type
‘human being’.”

— Friedrich NietzscheBeyond Good and Evil

These words remind us that ingenuity and strength of spirit can develop through
overcoming hardship. Without tests, mind and character may remain untrained and
never have the chance to reveal their full potential.

❇️ HISTORICAL LESSONS: THROUGH THE SIBYL'S EYES ❇️

“Once—during the first year after the birth of Christ—the Sibyl, drunk (but
not on wine), said: ‘Oh sorrow, sorrow, how low everything has fallen! What
poverty there is everywhere! Rome has become one great brothel, Caesar has
fallen to the level of cattle, and a Jew has become God!’”

— Friedrich Nietzsche2017, p. 483

Indeed, if the Sibyl could walk through a present-day metropolis, perhaps she
would exclaim: “Oh sorrow, sorrow, how everything has changed! Where are our
green pastures instead of these concrete jungles?” 😄 Through sarcasm,
Nietzsche shows how the pursuit of comfort and security can turn society into
something ironic and grotesque. Struggle and suffering, unpleasant as they are,
can nevertheless temper us and help preserve our humanity in a world where it
is easy to get lost in illusions of well-being.

❇️ PERSONAL GROWTH THROUGH CRISIS ❇️

“Richard Farson, who examined the theory of personal growth in extreme
situations, argued that crises very often help us become better. Paradoxically,
they push a person toward growth, although at times they can destroy them;
dangerous situations often ‘force people to reassess their attitudes toward
life and change them in accordance with a new, deeper understanding of their
own abilities, ideals, and goals.’” [1]

❇️ TRANSFORMATION THROUGH OVERCOMING DIFFICULTY ❇️

Struggle and the overcoming of hardship can therefore do more than temper our
character: they can contribute to deep personal transformation. Without
challenges, we may lose the ability to adapt and develop. 💪 By moving through
obstacles, we can become stronger, wiser, and more resilient in the face of
future tests.

❇️ CONCLUDING REFLECTIONS ❇️

The question remains open: does struggle make us weaker or stronger?
Perhaps the answer lies in a balance between overcoming hardship and preserving
inner harmony. 🧘‍♂️ Only conscious engagement with difficulty lets us draw out
the constructive side of struggle and use it for personal growth.

FAQ

Questions about this article

01What determines whether struggle makes a person stronger or weaker?

Hardship can become material for growth when a person can make sense of it, adapt, and retain an inner foundation. Crisis does not guarantee development, however: excessive or constant struggle can exhaust and destroy, so challenge must be balanced with recovery.

02Does comfort make modern people less resilient?

Comfort is not weakness in itself, but it can remove natural exertion from everyday life. People therefore reintroduce movement, training, and manageable challenges deliberately to maintain their physical and psychological ability to adapt.

03Does a crisis always lead to personal growth?

No. A crisis may prompt someone to reassess their assumptions, abilities, and goals, but it can also deplete or destroy their resources. Growth comes not from suffering automatically, but from how the person moves through difficulty and what support is available.
